1. Check the tide schedule: Low tide gives you more beach space and access under the pier. High tide limits where you can shoot but creates nice reflections.
2. Get a photo permit: Scripps Pier is on the UC San Diego campus and requires a permit for professional photography. Plan ahead to secure yours.
3. Time it for sunset: About 1.5 hours before sunset is the sweet spot to start your session. The light gets better as you go, ending with that gorgeous golden glow.
4. Bring a change of clothes: Many couples like to include some photos in the water. Bring a change of clothes if you want to splash around.

Absolutely! Dogs are welcome at this beach before 9am and after 6pm (4pm in summer). Just bring someone to hold the leash when needed.

Clouds create soft, even light that’s actually great for photos. Very heavy rain might require rescheduling, but light clouds often make for amazing images.

Can we take photos on top of the pier?

The pier itself is closed to the public, but we can shoot underneath and around it for equally stunning photos.
