When Allissa and Rylee visited San Diego from Idaho, they had no idea their trip would become one of the most important days of their lives. The morning of our photo session, they exchanged rings on the beach, making their engagement official. By evening, we were capturing their joy at the iconic Scripps Pier, with a sunset that seemed to celebrate along with them.
The December sky painted itself in perfect colors as these two women laughed, ran along the shore, and even splashed in the water. Their request for candid photos meant we had a genuinely fun time – catching real smiles, spontaneous hugs, and those little moments that show true connection.
Scripps Pier isn’t just another spot in San Diego – it’s something special for couples looking for engagement photos that stand out. Here’s why so many couples choose this location:
The long wooden pier creates leading lines that draw your eye right to the couple. With the ocean stretching out behind them, every photo has that “wow” factor. The structure itself offers both grand wide shots and intimate close-ups under its wooden beams.

Photographers call sunset the “golden hour” for good reason. At Scripps Pier, this light filters through the pier’s supports, creating patterns on the sand and water that make photos look almost magical. This was exactly what happened during Allissa and Rylee’s session!

The beach around Scripps Pier offers different settings within walking distance. You can move from under the pier to open beach to rocky sections all within minutes. This gives your photo collection nice variety without having to drive to multiple spots.

Is December a good time for Scripps Pier photos?
Yes! As Allissa and Rylee’s session shows, December can offer amazing sunsets and less crowded beaches. San Diego’s mild climate makes beach sessions nice year-round.
How long does a Scripps Pier engagement session take?
Most sessions last about 90 minutes, which gives us time to use different spots around the pier and catch the changing light.
Can we bring our dog to the session?
Absolutely! Dogs are welcome at this beach before 9am and after 6pm (4pm in summer). Just bring someone to hold the leash when needed.
What happens if it’s cloudy?
Clouds create soft, even light that’s actually great for photos. Very heavy rain might require rescheduling, but light clouds often make for amazing images.
Can we take photos on top of the pier?
The pier itself is closed to the public, but we can shoot underneath and around it for equally stunning photos.
